I always used to play through this game pretty boringly, with a party of Pikachu, the three starter Pokemon, Pidgey and Rattata. I've seen some people say they play through as Bug Catcher
Instead, take the HP Up and hidden Ether in the rock, and defeat the Rocket--Pikachu against Zubat, and Butterfree against Ekans.
